These changes, taken together, make it clear that postwar Galilee was quite different from prewar Galilee and emerged as the new “spiritual center of Judaism”82 at the same time as it experienced far more intense urbanization and romanization processes. We began our investigation by asking how important our understanding of the history of Galilee has been and is for our understanding of the historical Jesus.
